6. A Full Night's Sleep

Barefoot Session #2

Something happened last night that I have to write down. For as long as I can remember, I’ve woken up in the middle of the night — usually between one and two, sometimes as late as four, no matter when I went to bed. And getting back to sleep afterward has always been a struggle.

Last night, after grounding outside for about an hour and a half, I slept straight through. I didn’t wake up once. The only reason I got up at all was my alarm going off in the morning. I honestly can’t remember the last time that happened.

I went to work today, but my sister was home with my mom, and the two of them spent time outside together, feet on the ground, just sitting. My mom did do a little slow walking back and forth on her own, along the strip of soil I’ve already sifted.

I asked my sister Ann if mom had taken any naps, and she told me no. That’s unusual, since my mom’s sleep schedule tends to be all over the place, sometimes with naps more than once a day. No nap at all suggests she had a solid night’s rest too. She seemed to really enjoy grounding on the cleared strip today. It had rained that morning. When I got home from work, the soil had firmed up — slightly damp, but solid underfoot. It made for a nice surface to walk back and forth on.

Wet after rain Sifted ground

My mom was already done grounding for the day. I put in another hour of sifting this evening, grounding my own feet the whole time I worked. My sister Ann joined sitting with her feet on the soil right next to me while I sifted. The soil was still moist from the morning rain which made sifting slower going than usual. So I didn’t cover as much ground as I’d hoped. I gained a little more ground — maybe another foot into the circle. Slow and steady. I’ll pick it back up tomorrow.

To be continued…
