In Search of Healing: Walking Through God's Creation

4. Making It Safe First

Put in more than two hours on the path this morning, and the circle is really starting to look like something now — you can see the full ring of bare soil taking shape, grass still a little rough and uneven along the edges, but the shape of the path is finally there.

Full circle before raking

A good chunk of this morning went into hauling sod and rocks out with the cart, and raking the soil down smoother as I went.

Raked soil

But the bigger story of today was what kept turning up as I dug. More broken glass. A large screw. A thumbtack. I pulled rock after rock out of the ground too — some small, some genuinely large chunks of sandstone that had no business being that close to the surface.

I’m getting serious about the glass. I found several pieces yesterday, and a lot more today. That’s not a one-off anymore. I can’t just eyeball this and call it clear. I’m going to get a fine strainer and actually sift the soil in this circle before anyone sets a bare foot on it. Better to spend the extra time now than to find out the hard way later. I know there’s still more sod to clear — the grass in the center of the circle is staying for now, and I’ll get to that later. My focus right now is on the ring itself, since that’s the part my mom will actually be walking on. I want her to be able to start walking as soon as possible, so I’m prioritizing getting that walking path safe and ready before worrying about the center. — To be continued.
